This has become a one-day event that will culminate, we hope, in a beautiful light show tonight––people-powered "fireworks" across America tonight as millions of adults and children create twinkling neighborhoods, cities and towns simply by blinking their houselights, their camera flashes and their cell phone lights. For two minutes at 9pm local time (with rehearsal at 8).
Let's see how well viral + user-made + mainstream media mingle. Let's see if pro-am is an even better combination when no money is on the table.

Ditto if you are someone who would like to speak with reporters and bloggers about why we need ways for individual people and children to play a role in civic activities, not just as viewers, but as participants.

Because I can’t help sticking my fingers into every nonprof opportunity that comes my way, I’m lucky to meet a wide array of amazing, civic-minded folks doing some really neat stuff.
Case in point: Mark Tomizawa
I met Mark at an Ethos Roundtable (another great group!) event about a year ago, and we’ve kept in touch about various projects in Cambridge and beyond.
Mark saw my recent post about our Netroots Nation Wiffiti screen and passed along the details of a like-minded event he’s been busy planning. I give you:
“FREEDOM FLICKER”
9 PM TONIGHT, 1.20.09, 2 MINUTES
Every neighborhood, city and town in America
It’s like New Year’s Eve and the 4th of July rolled into one.
But people provide the fireworks by flickering their home lights, camera flashes and cell phone lights.
WHEN: Tonight, January 20. 9PM local time.
WHO: Men, Women, Teens and Kids everywhere join the Inauguration Festivities for two minutes.
WHAT: People flicker their home lights, camera flashes and cell phone lights.
WHY: 1) The Inauguration belongs to everyone. 2) In uncertain times, America has always pulled together, risen to the challenge and acted like one big neighborhood.
Freedom Flicker is about both.
Like fireworks, Freedom Flicker is a high-visibility celebration. It will set night skies glittering with the spirit of pitching in as volunteers and working together in both big and small ways in 2009 to overcome local challenges. Freedom Flicker was born in Boston and is an extension of the idea of lanterns and Paul Revere and spreading the word to create community action.
So, when your cell phone is already out of your pocket Wiffiti-ing, keep it flickering…
